This is going to be quick and to the point. I will say right now, in all honesty, the only reason I believe Joe Paterno is being fired is fear of law suits. When talking heads give their two second opinion on Joe being fired, all I hear is, “They did what was right for the university.” Now stop and think about that for the moment.
“THEY DID WHAT WAS RIGHT FOR THE UNIVERSITY” That disturbs me so much because I am sure that is the reason people, who had knowledge of the child rapes used when they did not go to the police. They justified it by saying, “We must do what is best for the university and not what is best for these children or the public at large for that matter.”
To hold a group above an individual is sickening. But it is nothing new. We see it with political parties, the church, our country, and of course, corporations.
Also argue that having tort reform would have made this situation far worse. After all, when you only have to fear being sued for a couple thousand bucks when you are a part of a billion dollar powerhouse…what kind of fear is that anyway. “You say you are suing us and the most you can get is $250,000? Okay. Here’s your check. No trial needed. Now sign this confidentiality form or we will drag on this suit so long that it will take ten years to see the first dime and cost you more in lawyer fees anyway. Sure. Sign right here.”
So are corporations people? How about universities? Are children people? Which is more important? So why are we even arguing about how wrong this really is?
